At the University of Western Ontario the other night, right-wing author and instigator Ann Coulter spoke to students.
Sound bites of interviews, youtube videos and points taken out of context are sometimes the weapons used by the media and agenda promoting people but sometimes off-handed comments can be one's own enemy, as Coulter found out.
The atmosphere had a feeling of tension as she spoke very candidly about the problems with U.S. immigration policy, national security and even made a comment that if Muslims 'converted to Christianity' there would be far fewer problems in the world. It might also be stated that if the people promoting Christianity actually lived the lives they espoused then the same result might also occur.
At one point a very articulate, 17 year old female Muslim student asked Ms. Coulter how she was supposed to travel if she did not have a 'magic carpet', quoting an earlier speech Coulter gave about Muslim's and airline security. Many students laughed as Coulter stood there somewhat red-faced when faced with someone intelligently questioning her statements. When pressed about the travel question, Coulter flippantly stated they can "ride camels. Next question." This attempt at humour is a tactic often used by any person wishing to deflect the issue of the embarrassment of being caught in their own audacious comments. Of course these are taken from snippets of the exchange and the lecture was said to be relatively uneventful.
Subsequently, Coulter's lecture at the University of Ottawa was cancelled yesterday after numerous students were outraged at her coming to speak at their school and the organizers of the event thought it should be cancelled in the concern of Coulter's safety. It seems somewhat ironic that an institution that promotes free thinking, open discussion and intelligent assessment of free speech. would hamper this well known pundit, her political views aside.
Coulter speaks later this week in Calgary and is looking forward to it because 'they are more conservative'. Over the years she has also made comments like:
"They better hope the United States doesn't roll over one night and crush them. They are lucky we allow them to exist on the same continent.
They don't even need to have an army, because they are protected, because they're on the same continent with the United States of America , , , we're their trading partner. We keep their economy afloat."
When one has this much contempt for Canada, could someone please explain her reason for coming here. Maybe her $10,000 appearance fee has something to do with it.
