NEW ORLEANS -- A substitute teacher and assistant football coach has been arrested after being accused of punching a 15-year-old student in the face, officials said Friday.
Montreal Baham, a student at McDonogh 35 High School, told WDSU-TV that the attack happened as he was leaving class Thursday.
Baham said Matthew Wilson, the substitute teacher, told him to leave the room because he was in the wrong class. When Baham came back to get his book bag, he said the teacher hit him with the door, grabbed him by his neck and shoved him up against a wall.
Baham said he defended himself, and that's when Wilson punched him in the face.
The Orleans Parish School Board issued a statement late Friday saying that it is cooperating with the New Orleans Police Department's investigation into the incident.
A New Orleans Police school resource officer was notified by school authorities immediately after the incident and contacted the NOPD and school security, school officials said.
The school district has fired Wilson. He has been charged with one count of simple battery.
Baham was treated for his injuries at the school's health clinic and released to his parents, the school board said.
