ROCKFORD, Ill. - The shooting of Mark Barmore by two Rockford officers draws another big name to Kingdom Authority Church.
Nation Of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan spoke tonight at a rally in support of Pastor Melvin Brown and his family, Mark Barmore and his family, and the Rockford community as a whole. Farrakhan spoke about peace and the value of justice. "I come before you tonight filled with pain because of the circumstances that have brought me to Rockford," he told the crowd.
A counter protest was all set to go on at the same time, but it was called off at the last minute over concerns of violence.
"My intention was to go to Kingdom Authority International Church to confront Louis Farrakhan on his hypocrisy concerning the Barmore case and the murders of three police officers in Chicago this summer," said Chicago politician and former comptroller candidate Republican William J. Kelly, who planned the retort. He says gang violence is the real problem behind most of our crime, and that police officers are here to protect us.
Because of the change in plans, Kelly says he plans to hold a different event in Rockford at another time.
