HOW A GENETIC MUTATION LED TO THE WHITE RACE (5135 hits)

By Nadra Kareem Nittle
January 29, 2011

Imagine a world where everyone had brown skin. Tens of thousands of years ago, that was the case, say scientists at Penn State University. So, how did white people get here?

Evidently, when humans began leaving Africa 20,000 to 50,000 years ago, a skin-whitening mutation appeared randomly in a sole individual. That mutation proved advantageous as humans moved into Europe. Why? Because it upped the amount of vitamin D the migrants had.

"Sun intensity is great enough in equatorial regions that the vitamin can still be made in dark-skinned people despite the ultraviolet shielding effects of melanin," explained Rick Weiss of the Washington Post. "In the north, where sunlight is less intense and cold weather demands that more clothing be worn, melanin's ultraviolet shielding became a liability, the thinking goes."

The Penn State researchers also found that Asians developed light skin because of different genetic mutations. So, what does this mean? Have scientists identified a race gene? Hardly. As the Post notes, the scientific community maintains that "race is a vaguely defined biological, social and political concept, ... and skin color is only part of what race is--and is not."

As I've explained in my "What Is Race?" piece on the Race Relations site, scientists still say that race is more of a social construct than a scientific one because people of the so-called same race have more distinctions in their DNA than people of different races do. In fact, scientists posit that all people are more than 99.9 percent genetically identical.

The Penn State researchers' findings on the skin-whitening gene show that skin color amounts for a miniscule biological difference between humans.

"The newly found mutation involves a change of just one letter of DNA code out of the 3.1 billion letters in the human genome--the complete instructions for making a human being," the Post reports.

Still, scientists and sociologists fear that the identification of this skin-whitening mutation may lead people to argue that whites, blacks and others are somehow inherently different. Keith Cheng, the scientist who led the team of Penn State researchers, wants the public to know that's not so. He told the Post, "I think human beings are extremely insecure and look to visual cues of sameness to feel better, and people will do bad things to people who look different."

His statement captures what racism is in a nutshell. Truth be told, people may look different, but there's virtually no difference in our genetic make up. Skin color really is just skin deep.

That explains why my dear dear friend (Jamaican, dark and beautiful) successfully received a lung transplant from a white woman.

It is why racial identity plays no role whatsoever in the organ transplant program.

Brother Steve would like this article because that's what he's always being saying that race is just a soical construct. I want to say that I honestly in my heart see all people as people made by the same creator sharing more similarities than differences which is why I refer to people as my sisters and brothers. I don't just do that here on this social site, but in real life ... at work also. I've found that in doing so people are generally well receiving of it and relate to me as if I'm part of them.

As far as the ["The newly found mutation involves a change of just one letter of DNA code out of the 3.1 billion letters in the human genome--the complete instructions for making a human being," the Post reports.] it makes no difference whatsoever because it just a part of evolution and human's God given adaptability. God is truly the Master Craftsmen and there is no other like him!

Interesting article with just one theory of why skin shades developed into so many varieties. I still think that most of it has to do with the sunlight combined with clothes at the higher latitudes because by the time humans moved out of Africa they had lost most body hair and would have to wear clothing to protect them in cold climates. That clothing would hinder Vitamin D production as mentioned here.

One other factor too though, because Africans themselves vary in skin tone to a large degree, even amongst tribes, could be that those with lighter skin tones from the start managed to survive longer in the colder regions and that eventually few if any dark skinned folks made it that far north. Light skin has the blood vessels further in from the skin which allows less heat loss in the cold while dark skinned folks often cannot take as cold of climate because of the more rapid heat loss through the blood vessels being closer to the skin. This works in reverse though in hot climates with dark skinned folks being better able to shed heat quickly.

Sounds like a basic process of natural selection due to climate combined with the fact that few traveled far in the past due to lack of speedy transportation. If you lived in warm climate you probably never ever got to cold climate during your life and same for cold climate dwellers. All of this of course with the exception of the more adventurous souls who colonized the various regions in the first place.

At any rate all this further shows me how we are exactly the same peoples with simple variances in exterior appearance in what appear to be entirely "environmentally" related form. I can bet that if you took a group of basic "white" folks and had them live in sunny warm region of Africa, exactly as the tribes of rural Africa has lived to this day, after only a few generations you would see a natural shift toward darker skin. Sunlight darkens the skin and that constant darkening would cause genetic changes in the parents then passed down to the children who would be then even more able to darken in response to the hot sun. Reverse would also work for Africans living in the northern climes with the types of clothes and exposure ancient peoples had to deal with.

Nowadays with ac and heat and cars and such we seldom are forced to be strongly exposed to the environmental extremes in the western world. Other factors though appear to be changing our bodies due to the toxins, climate, and diet, and not for the better.

Good point Irma...

Several of my family members are lactose intolerant, as I am. Albeit, when I was younger the milk didn't bother me. Two of My Grandchildren in particular. I would also add, many of my White and Latina Family Members have experienced the intolerance as well.

Interesting....

Thanks Sister Irma, very good example of our migration - the cause and affect.

Peace and Love,

Greg.

@Siebra, please note that people who live in very cold places long enough for natural mutation have blond, not black hair???...

We must leave out the Eskmoes, because they came not from the northern cold climates but from Asia.(smile)

@Siebra, you know I like this one about vitam D, better than the last one.lol...I always see Mother Nature as doing things only to help us survive...dispite us trying to use them to self distruct. (smile)

@Corey The 'mutant' here of mines means things like we have cycle cells as a natural safe guard to protect us AFRICANS from malaria mosquitoes...and we have not been out of Africa long enough for these genes in us to mutate out side Africa and in a place like America where these cycle cells work against us not for us as they did in Africa...

another example is how so many of us have a problem drinking cow's milk, because we have not mutated enough yet to start out without our mother's natural milk. (smile)
