The final Saturday in November is the date and the Louisiana Superdome is the place for this annual gridiron clash of two powerhouse Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) rival football teams. It's a full weekend of fun, excitement and action as the Tigers of Grambling State University take on the Jaguars of Southern University in the Bayou Classic for the 37th straight time since the Classic began in 1974. State Farm Insurance is the title sponsor.
Both teams are 18-18 in the matchups over the years. Following a decade of Southern dominance in the game in the 1990s, Grambling has taken five of the past nine meetings, including the last two years. The Classic has been played in New Orleans every year since it began except for 2005 when the Superdome was undergoing repairs from Hurricane Katrina. It was played in Houston that year and returned to New Orleans in 2006.
In addition to the football game, Bayou Classic also offers a "Super Job Fair" on Friday, November 26 at the Downtown Sheraton Hotel, 500 Canal Street, from 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. A college fair will also be held at the Sheraton on the same day and time. For more information on both fairs call 1-888-843-1273.
For those who like to party, there will be a "Battle of the Bands" and Greek Festival on Friday evening, the 26th, from 7-10 p.m. at the Superdome. The following day, a "Fan Festival" will be held just outside the Superdome in Champions Square from 10 a.m. till 6:00 while the game is going on. The game itself will kick off at 1:00 p.m.
