MISSOURI--A Baytown teacher is suing a school district, saying that it terminated her employment due to racial discrimination.
Plaintiff Veronica Cooper filed the lawsuit in Harris County on Dec. 27, alleging that defendant Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District treated her differently from the other white teachers for the years she was employed and, as a result, ended her employment.
Cooper is a 54-year-old, African-American female and was hired by Cedar Bayou School as a teacher/coach. In the lawsuit, Cooper says she was told that she was the first African-American teacher/coach ever assigned to the physical education department. She was hired in 2007, and over the next few years, she says she was treated differently due to the color of her skin.
According to Cooper, at orientation, a fellow teacher told Cooper that she disapproved of her even though the teacher did not know her. Cooper says she learned that the teacher reassigned white students out of her class and into the teacher’s class. On Feb. 19, 2010, Cooper was let go.
Cooper is seeking declaratory and injunctive relief, reasonable damages, attorney’s fees, costs of the lawsuit and all other relief the court considers to be appropriate.
The plaintiff is represented by Missouri City Attorney Larry Watts of Watts and Associates.
