Katie Couric, perhaps reflecting the rather goofy and insular attitudes of her class, is awfully worried about her fellow Americans hating on Muslims, more worried in fact than about Muslims of the Islamo Fascist variety hating on Americans.
According to the Daily Caller:
"'The bigotry expressed against Muslims in this country has been one of the most disturbing stories to surface,' Couric said. 'Of course, a lot of noise was made about the Islamic Center, mosque, down near the World Trade Center, but I think there wasn't enough sort of careful analysis and evaluation of where this bigotry toward 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide, and how this seething hatred many people feel for all Muslims, which I think is so misdirected, and so wrong — and so disappointing.'"
Aside from the disquiet that many people felt about a mosque being erected in the shadow of Ground Zero, a disquiet felt by many Muslims by the way, Couric offers no evidence to support this smear on her fellow Americans. However, fortunately, she has a cure for the disease.
"'Maybe we need a Muslim version of 'The Cosby Show,'' Couric replied. 'I know that sounds crazy, I know that sounds crazy. But 'The Cosby Show' did so much to change attitudes about African Americans in this country, and I think sometimes people are afraid of what they don't understand, like you, Mo ... If they became part of the popular culture.'"
"The Cosby Show", a hit sitcom depicting the adventures of an upper middle class African American family produced by and starring Bill Cosby, ran through much of the 1980s. There are, however, a couple of problems with Katie Couric's thesis.
First, "The Cosby Show" likely reflected more than drove attitudes toward African Americans, depicting a black family that had achieved a great measure of prosperity and who had problems and joys that pretty
much everyone else had. In fact 'The Cosby Show' was criticized by some on the left for not being overtly political nor depicting problems like racism, poverty, or anything else said to still be afflicting African Americans in the United States.
Second, there is no Muslim American equivalent of Bill Cosby around, someone admired and respected by the vast majority of people of all races. "The Cosby Show" worked because Bill Cosby kept tight control over the creative aspects of the show, not letting it meander off from what it was.
Mind, a sitcom about an upper middle class American Muslim family would certainly work if there were a Muslim Bill Cosby to keep it in hand and not try to make points with it. That would mean no references to terrorism, honor killing, or the sort of bigotry that seems to have Katie Couric all exercised. The problems such a show would depict would be things like child rearing, dating, and other mundane sorts of things.
That in itself would get the Islamo Fascists all exercised and start issuing fatwas against everyone associated with the show. Having a Muslim American teenager go out with a boy, perhaps not wearing a head scarf would send Al Qaeda into paroxysms of fury.
That is why Katie Couric's dream is not likely to become reality anytime soon.
