Good Post Sister Siebra: I hope people are reading this: Its about to get serious
Man, I knew this was eventually going to come about, as people are trying to re-introduce this into the middle and high schools again. That word should not be used in a classroom where there are immature kids. I know it is history and can not be ignored, but that is not the place. I've gone through this year with my son and had to have him removed or get into fights and so much more. Here is a piece of conversation between myself and his teacher.

My name is Anita Moore and I am Scott Farley's mother. I would appreciate it if you would contact me. I am not happy about this course of study (Huckelberry Finn) he is being required to read and would like him removed immediately.
I spoke with the guidance counselor (Mrs. Stapleton) and she told me to email you and request a meeting. I don't want my child studying a book where the word ***** is constantly being said. It is offensive to African Americans and I feel this is not an appropriate book that children should be required to read. Thank You!

Her Response: I am very sorry that you are unhappy with the book choice/course of study.
Please let me assure you that the intention of this book and my class is NOT to be disrespectful. On the contrary, it is to point out the ignorance and racism that caused slavery…and was particularly bad during the Civil War (the time period for this book). I gave a very thorough introduction to this book and the use of certain language. I told the students that no disrespectful use or repetition of the word would be tolerated. For the most part, all my classes have been very respectful and understanding of the impact of that particular word. Once, a few students laughed and I stopped class and told them that I personally cringe when the word is used and that (by choosing to laugh) they have demonstrated a lack of understanding and respect. I have not had any problems since that day.
Due to limited materials and the need to walk the student’s through this book, I have to read it IN CLASS. I know that two other 11thgrade teachers are also reading the book at this time.
I would be happy to meet with you to discuss alternative assignments (possibly having Scott work independently elsewhere until we are finished). You are also welcome to join us for a class and hear the discussion (if you would like).

Ms. Brooks,
I understand your intentions and I commend you on them, but I don't believe this is the way to bring discussion and point out ignorance to children by that word continually being said in a classroom setting, think if the roles were reversed.
If you realize they were laughing in the class at one point, then you can believe it is being spoken outside of the class and that is what my son is concerned about, as you know he plays sports and any infractions would result in his termination.
I would definitely like Scott to complete alternative assignments elsewhere, and would like an appointment with you. Any morning is good for me, As early in the morning as you like. I spoke who with Mrs. Stapleton who is available sit in if you would like.

(Needless to say, there were fights and name calling because of this book being read in this teacher's class. They don't just read it, they have audio of it from that time period where huckleberry finn and others is actually calling people the word *****, sometimes rather harshly and abrasively, so I eventually had to have him removed and took my complaints to the board as well as the radio station, with no return calls. What kind of nonsense is this in the south, as this would not happen in the north.)
This was her comment to me:
For today, I will have Scott go next door to Mr. Hahn (he has planning) to begin work on The Narrative Life of Frederick Douglas.
We will meet tomorrow morning (per Ms. Stapleton’s email – 7:15 AM), if that is acceptable.
After I removed my son from the class, I later found out from the school board of another district who are not using that book, that this was the teachers choice as they make up the curriculum and decide on the books during the summer, and that this is done purposely. You draw your own conclusions!
People we’ve come a long way, but we’ve got a hell of a long way to go.

...what is required here is going to spread...
If the teacher has not had any classes in our history they can not do anything like this in their class...."I" hope that this is a great start of us networking how to get this done as a proper teaching tool only if the one teaching it has the knowledge to teach it...for a teacher to say what was said to Anita would require this not be read by her, because she has no idea what the book is all aobut and what it was meant to say and to do!!!
What this teacher did was more demeaning o fus that the book ittself...it says you are too dumb to understand what is is even you ae saying...remember tose ropes have been called just a few youths playing a j oke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or theyare not Black so how canyou say it is teriorism, ect.
