BLACK HISTORY MOMENT: ZORA NEAL HURSTON...THE DIVA OF WRITERS (1266 hits)

Zora Neale Hurston (1891 - 1960)
Novelist, anthropologist, folklorist

Flamboyant, bold and outrageous were Zora Neale Hurston’s writings, as was her life. As the diva of the Harlem Renaissance, Hurston was the most prolific black woman writer of her times and a brilliant chronicler of African American life.

A literary ancestor of the contemporary canon of African American women’s writings like Toni Morrison, Alice Walker and Maya Angelou, etc., Hurston helped to create the art of black women’s narrative voices.

Hurston’s genius for storytelling and drama derived from depicting the lives of her subjects in the poetic cadence of black idiom, and her art form won her critical acclaim in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Hurston’s explorations of black female characters, her analysis of women’s concerns, and their romantic quest for personal wholeness and female autonomy influenced a generation of writers.

Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), Hurston’s fictional autobiography, is her most popular novel, and is considered the first black feminist novel of the 20th Century. A lyrical tale about one woman’s awakening and maturation, Hurston’s masterpiece is about the liberation of Janie Crawford and her search for autonomy and identity through three marriages.

In 1961 Hurston died in penniless obscurity and was buried in an unmarked grave. The article “In Search of Zora Neale Hurston” written by Alice Walker and published in Ms. Magazine in 1975 brought Hurston’s books back from obscurity. And, consequently, the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God was the best selling university press book of the 1980’s, bringing Hurston, in death, the fame and admiration that had eluded her in life. Walker in the 1980’s replaced Hurston’s unmarked grave with a tombstone that now reads “Zora Neale Hurston: a Genius of the South.

Born in Eatonville, Florida, the first all-black township incorporated in the U.S., Hurston wrote numerous short stories for literary magazines before entering Barnard College in New York City as its first black student. Hurston graduated in 1928 and then continued at Columbia University to work with the famous anthropologist Franz Boas.

ZORA NEALE HURSTON:

Zora is one of my writing teachers and mentors. She was an original. She traveled the south alone in her car (carrying a pistol for safety) to do her research into black folks culture.

Here is what she wrote in her autobiography DUST TRACKS ON THE ROAD.

ZORA NEALE HURSTON:

“I contend that we are just like everybody else. We are every kind of people from high to low. In other words, we are just people. Now I freely admit that we can match the white race scoundrel beast for scoundrel beast and skunk for skunk. Black skunks are just as natural as white skunks. Them that’s born skunks will be skunks regardless. But I also point out that we have just as high and as fine and industrious individuals among us as any other group.”

“Why should I be proud to be a Negro? Why should anybody be proud to be white? Or yellow? Or red? After all, the word “race” is a loose classification of physical characteristics. It tells nothing about the insides of people.”

“Pointing at achievements tells nothing either. Races have never done anything. What seems race achievement is the work of individuals. The white race did not go into a laboratory and invent incandescent light. That was Edison. The Jews did not work out Relativity. That was Einstein. If you are under the impression that every white man is an Edison, just look around a bit.”

“Now suppose a Negro does something really magnificent and I glory, not in the benefit to mankind, but in the fact that the doer was a Negro. Must I not also go hang my head in shame when a member of my race does something terrible? I do glory when a Negro does something fine. I gloat because he or she has done a fine thing but not
because he was a Negro. That is incidental and accidental. It is the human achievement which I honor.”

“Why waste time keeping conscious of your physical aspects? What the world is crying and dying for is less race consciousness. The human race would blot itself out entirely if it had any more. It is a deadly explosive on the tongues of men.”

“Priding yourself on your physical makeup, something over which you have no control, is just another sign that the human cuss is determined not to be grateful. He gives himself a big hand on the way he looks and lets on that he arranged it all himself.”

“I have found that I had no need of either class or race prejudice, those scourges of humanity. The solace of easy generalization was taken from me—but I received the richer gift of individualism. When I have been made to suffer or when I have been made happy by others, I have known that individuals were responsible for that and not races. All clumps of people turn out to be individuals on close inspection.”

“Negroes are just like anybody else. Some soar. Some plod ahead. Some just make a mess and step back in it—like the rest of America and the world.”

Next to Maya Angelou and Nikki Giovanni she's one of my favorite writers. I remember my aunt giving me the book Their Eyes Were Watching God when I was 14 years old because it was required reading for my high school English class. I couldn't put it down!!!

MIne also.

I think I am the only white guy who read and LOVED "Their Eyes Were Watching God."

One book I would highly recommend is a wonderful bio recently done by Valerie Boyd WRAPPED IN RAINBOWS. That was my first intro to Zora and her writing.

She is a master!!!
